I love[d]?? Coldplay [sortof odd, i suppose, since many consider them pretty Middle of the Road and therefore may wonder how they can create such strong responses from people]... I'd say I was obsessed with them a few years ago - crying at being unable to attend the X&Y album launch party cos i had a Mechanics exam the next day would probably attest to this.

And yet now, whilst I hardly ever listen to them, whenever shuffle does chance upon one of their songs, I recognise just how much I still love their music, despite my own tastes having shifted and evolved, as expected, I can still count on Coldplay to give me depth in musical experience.

Although I'd still say they're my favourite band.. maybe because I think I've lost that kindof obsessive nature over music in general... sometimes i feel guilty in holding this statement, as though it is now false because of the fact that i have listened to maybe 5coldplay songs in total in the past few months. But i guess frequency and active participation isn't a requisite. If you can still love someone, having not seen them due to distance or whatever for a significant period of time, then why not still love a musician?

I think it's about frame of mind and approach. Irrational love of a band or artist, for me at least, could only have happened at that age - the few years before and during 6th form. For others it may be different. x

I think there is a distinct difference between worship and just liking music too. I really love the Feeling's Twelve Stops from Home, particularly as the music holds so much sentimental value for me because it's attached itself to the feelings I had when I first started going out with my fiancee. However, fandom is a different beast entirely. I just find it really perplexing personally, the autograph hunting, the buying the merchandise etc. I just can't get over the fact that the musicians are never so different from you or me.

I suppose, music and fandom alike is part of our identity as human beings. But just because you don't find that in music doesn't mean that there is nothing. If we belong to any same group then that's something which brings you together. Being a Christian for instance automatically gives me something in common with other Christians. I suppose we become disciples of a principle and then journey in it together.
